Tasmania's climate is described as a temperate maritime one. Given that it is a relatively small island surrounded by large expanses of ocean it has a unique weather pattern. It is the most southerly state of Australia and is therefore the closest part of Australia to Antartica! It is also located in the path of the "roaring forties" a prevailing wind that encircles the globe between the latitudes of 40°S to 50°S.

Summer in Tasmania lasts from December to February with the average maximum temperature of 21°C (70°F). Winter is from June to August with an average maximum temperature of 12°C (54°F). In comparison to the rest of the Australian weather this is significantly cooler, with many comparing Tasmania to the United Kingdom in this respect.

Tasmania has mixed rainfall with the majority falling around the winter months. The higher areas of Tasmania also experience snowfalls, usually in winter but some unusual cold snaps have also brought snowfalls in warmer parts of the year to the higher peaks.

Overall, Tasmania has a very diverse climate. It has four of the most distinct seasons when compared to the rest of the Australian weather.
