It is famous for its unusual name and characteristics, and more recently the Tasmanian Devil became much more popular after Warner Bros created a cartoon version of the Tazmanian Devil called "Taz".

It is a nocturnal animal that is about the size of a small dog. It was given it's name by early European explorers who thought the growls and screeches sounded like something that came from the underworld!

It puts this to good use by devouring the entire carcass of most animals that it eats. The devil is usually a scavenger that feeds on dead carrion killed by cars or other animals, however when it needs to it can also hunt for itself. It is not dangerous to humans unless trapped or it's young are threatened.

Sadly, recently the Tasmania Devil has started to die out as its population in Tasmania has been attacked by this deadly and unsightly Tasmanian Devil cancer.

As you can see it is a debilitating disease that causes large tumours to grow on the devils face. If these grow large enough they can obstruct the animal's airway or prevent them from eating, causing them to die from starvation. Currently a large amount of research is being done to try and save the Tazmanian devil and prevent it from becoming extinct.
