South Tasmania Trip

Mt Wellington Tasmania

Day 1: First stop is Hobart and Mt Wellington Tasmania (the airport is about a 30 minute drive from the centre of Hobart). Spend the first day exploring this beautiful riverside city. Enjoy a walk around the Hobart waterfront and stop for lunch at one of the outstanding seafood restaurants including Fish Frenzy or Mures. Also if you're lucky enough to have arrived on a Saturday explore the Salamanca Markets. Then take a short drive to the top of Mount Wellington (about 30 minutes) to see the city and south Tasmania from a birdseye view. If you're feeling adventurous you could even mountain bike back down Mt Wellington Tasmania!

Tahune Forest Airwalk

Day 2: Today walk in the treetops on the Tahune Forest Airwalk. Drive south on the Huon Trail towards Huonville (about 1 hour from Hobart) visiting South Tasmania wineries along the way. Head through Geeveston known as the "forest town" of south Tasmania on your way to the Tahune Forest Airwalk (which is about 20 minutes further on). Here enjoy walking among the treetops on the 50 metre high Tahune Forest Airwalk structure before heading back to ground level where you can enjoy some more tranquil strolls along the Huon and Picton Rivers.

Head a 30 minutes drive further south towards Dover and Hastings to visit the spectacular Hastings Caves where you can go on a tour of these majestic dolomite caves and swim in the thermal springs nearby. On the way back to Hobart stop by Huonville and visit some the quaint attractions including the wooden boat building factory and relax with some devonshire tea and scones. Arrive back in Hobart in the evening to enjoy a meal at one of the many gourmet restaurants and enjoy an evening stroll around the Hobart Waterfront recounting your time in the trees on the Tahune Forest Airwalk.

Richmond Tasmania

Day 3: Leave Hobart this morning northward bound for the historic town of Richmond Tasmania. Richmond is about 25 kilometres from Hobart and is on the "Convict Trail" with important historic significance to Australia. Visit the Richmond Gaol and experience how harsh convict life was when South Tasmania was first settled. Also make sure to stop at the Richmond Maze and Tearooms to have some fun finding your way around this fairly complex maze and reward yourself with some tea and scones!

Next head on to Port Arthur where you will find the Port Arthur Convict Site. Included in the admission price is the interpretation gallery, a harbour cruise, a guided walking tour, the convict museum, and access to the many restored buildings and beautiful gardens. If you're feeling brave don't miss the Port Arthur Ghost Tour in the evening and hear about (and maybe see!) some of the ghosts that are thought to be old convicts and prison guards.

Freycinet

Day 4: On the last day of your South Tasmania trip drive to Freycinet to explore the fantastic coastal scenery in this region. If it's warm enough enjoy a refreshing swim in Wineglass Bay's beautiful crystal clear, azure waters or just sunbake on the spectacular white sand beach. Then head back to Hobart for your flight home.
