Wow. Words cannot really describe the wonder I felt walking through the Cataract Gorge in Launceston. What a beautiful part of the world and only 10 minutes walk from the city centre. Please include more on your site about this beautiful place.
We started on a sunny yet crisp Sunday afternoon, at the hop-on point of the chairlifts and made our way down the grassy slope, past the swimming pool which sits just metres from the ‘lake’ part of the gorge. Both of which I am told are popular swimming spots in the summer, hard to believe in the midst of a Tassie winter! The water sparkled as we walked over the concrete footbridge and found ourselves winding up through the trees and foliage where autumn leaves fell heavily along the way. The track opened out into the mouth of the gorge; a narrow concrete track that hugs the gorge cliff side with the water below. With the mouth of the gorge up ahead and rock climbers scaling the cliff walls on the opposite side we walked in the late afternoon sunlight listening to the echo of bird call rebound off the cliff walls around us.
What a beautiful way to spend a winter’s afternoon. We will certainly be back, but next time in summer when we plan to brave the black gorge waters and try out the swimming pool.
Yep I agree Cataract Gorge is stunning. We are travelling round tassie by road and loving it! PS thanks for the tips on tasmaniatrip.com we especially love the gourmet get-away itinerary!
